Mary Helen’s Spring Beauty Guide

Warmer weather calls for an update on our beauty routine. Fresh, natural looking makeup and hair are two of my go-to looks for this time of year that work beautifully for day and night.

With clean, glowing skin little else is required beyond a hint of color on the cheeks and lips, and lightly defined eyes. When it comes to the skin I like to keep things natural so my skin can breathe. I use a light concealer under the eyes during the day, and generally avoid heavier foundations unless I’m shooting or on camera. I favor peachy pink blush for an “I just worked out” glow, and will use either a powdered and cream blush, depending on the day, how dry my skin is, and what my daughters have snuck out of my makeup bag. The last step for my skin routine is to add a dash of highlighter (try using a heavy cream if you don’t have a cream highlighter handy) across the top of the cheekbones for an extra dewy glow.

I like to keep my eye makeup light for a workout to prevent smudging. I often add a dash of the same highlighter that I use across my cheeks under my brows and across my eyelids. After I wrap my workout I’ll add a more defined brow, light liner (typically a deep chocolate brown or black) and mascara for a more dramatic look. For evening I’ll add neutral toned eye shadow and line the inside of my upper lids for a bigger eye. A pale pink gloss or stain on the lips brings it all together.

When it comes to my hair I love experimenting with new styles. A center or side part with two small twists is a great base for a natural, easy, half back look or a more romantic bun. I love this look with curls or straight hair. Begin with a clean part and pull a small section of hair from the front close to the part back and twist. Clip into place a few inches from the face along the crown of head on both sides. Leave down for an easy 70’s inspired style or pull the hair from here into a low center ponytail and twist into a simple bun. Add a flower on the side for a touch of Giselle inspired vibes.
