Meet the Trainer: Brittany Hillyer

How did you start dancing?

I started dancing when I was 3 in Lawrenceville, Georgia. My mom was a dance teacher, which is how I was introduced to dance. I loved tagging along to all of her classes, even when I was older, and would mess around on the side trying to copy everything she did.  She was one of my first ballet teachers, and later taught me jazz and tap as well.

What is your favorite Ballet Beautiful workout move?

ABS! I would do an entire hour of ab exercises if I could. It’s the best feeling when they’re sore the next day.

What is your top fitness tip?

Try to do something active once a day, even if its a walk around the block.  Fitness has the incredible ability to positively alter your mindset.

What is your best healthy living tip?

WATER!  I drink tons of water throughout the day. I’ve never been a soda drinker (fun fact – I’ve never drank an entire soda in my life!) because I used to hate the carbonation, but now that I’m older I never have that craving so I try to stay away. I’m positive that is why I’ve never had any major skin problems. It’s also just great for your entire body!

What is your favorite dance memory?

Probably dancing in George Balanchine’s La Source with the New York City Ballet. It was one of my last performances with the company as an apprentice and after the performance I received my corps contract! My adrenaline was off the charts. I’m not sure any experience will top that.

Favorite ballet?

George Balanchine’s Brahms-Schoenberg Quartet, specifically the fourth movement. The music is romantic yet feisty and builds throughout the movement. By the end there’s so much energy coursing through your body that you leave the stage feeling incredibly fulfilled.

Also, George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco. I’ve never danced it, but know it’s one of the most physically challenging ballets to do. The music is incredible and has a way of making me cry almost every time.

Favorite go-to healthy food?

Almonds! I always keep some on hand.

What is your favorite indulgence or treat?

A Levain cookie or frozen yogurt (an unhealthy amount… with ALL THE TOPPINGS).

How do you style your dancewear from the studio to the streets?

I love to wear my black tights and a leotard with a pair of jean shorts and a light jacket. It’s stylish and I can easily transition into a session!

Do you have a favorite app that makes your life easier?

Well, I just downloaded ‘Cleanly’ which is a laundry pick up/drop off app…. It’s definitely going to make my life easier, and my wallet lighter… So in retrospect, maybe my life won’t be that much easier. Ha.

Something interesting about yourself we wouldn’t expect?

I am currently a journalism student at Hunter College!

When you’re not dancing, we can find you… 

In a hip hop class occasionally! I’ll be the awkward lanky tall girl in the back going FULL OUT.
