Meet the Trainer: Dioni Georgitsou

How did you start dancing?

I was dying to take ballet classes as a kid and finally, when I was eight, my mother took me to Mioara Popescu’s Dance School in Athens, Greece. That was where I took my first ballet classes with an amazing teacher. She is still my favorite teacher and a very important person in my life today.

What is your favorite Ballet Beautiful workout move?
That would definitely be Swan Arms. With or without weights, they give the arms an elegant and toned look, strengthen the upper body and improve posture.

What is your top fitness tip?

Keep the body in motion and make exercise, no matter what kind, a part of your routine. Persistence is key. Walk as much as possible, avoid the elevator where there are staircases and run, Forrest, run!

What is your best healthy living tip?
I would point out the importance of mental and emotional balance and tranquility. Getting enough sleep is fundamental. Try to eliminate stress as much as possible.

What is your favorite dance memory?

Last year I danced with Dardo Galleto’s dance company in Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. The experience of dancing in such a beautiful place and being part of a prestigious festival, made it a moment that I will always cherish.

Favorite ballet?
My favorite ballet is Giselle! More than anything I find the musical composition compelling. The adagio in the second act’s pas de deux is probably my favorite piece.

The lyricism of movement combined with a love story makes it the diamond of what is called Romantic Ballet.

Favorite go-to healthy food?

Lots of fruit, nuts and all natural smoothies and juices.

What is your favorite indulgence or treat?

Any form of chocolate and frozen yogurt!

How do you style your dancewear from the studio to the streets?

I often wear a pair of shorts or jeans over my leotard and like this I have my outfit for the day. Sometimes I add a ballet wrap when it’s chilly.
It’s elegant, comfortable and practical.

Do you have a favorite app that makes your life easier?

One that I really like is Duolingo. Through some well-designed stages you learn the basics and more of any language you pick. I downloaded the app to learn some Spanish and so far that’s practically all I do during the long subway trips.

Something interesting about yourself we wouldn’t expect?

I worked as a counseling psychologist in a Rehab Center for a year, during my senior year in college.

When you’re not dancing, we can find you…

Riding my bike around Williamsburg!
